Northern Soul’s Kitchen is a restaurant concept built on many passions and ideals. Located in Glasgow, Scotland our goal is to bring organic fusion cooking from around the globe under one roof and to train, mentor and inspire disadvantaged young people to build a career in catering.
Everything from traditional Scottish, Indonesian, Vegetarian, Cajun, Creole, French, Italian, Thai, and Indian cuisines will be taught to our apprentices - and served to the public.
Our promise is to keep all our products as free range, sustainably sourced, organic and as local as possible. Our commitment to our community not only means feeding them delicious and nutritious food but to use other local small businesses for our needs, like farmers markets, butcher shops, and local organic vegetable growers.
Northern Soul’s Kitchen will be warm, inviting and very reasonably priced; a cool little neighbourhood place where locals can mingle with friends. Not only will it be the place to go for a great meal but we will also feature local artists work and host events that bring the neighbourhood community together.
The best part of this restaurant concept is being able to use this platform as a training post for troubled kids that may have a desire to enter into the culinary industry. A bit like Jamie Oliver's 15 Restaurant, Northern Soul's Kitchen wants to inspire, motivate and train disadvantaged young people - homeless, unemployed, overcoming drug or alcohol problems - and encourage them to create a rewarding career for themselves in the restaurant industry.
Our philosophy is for the trainees to learn within the actual work environment, with professional staff, surrounded by the produce, equipment and dishes that they will work with and be inspired by. Gradually, their levels of responsibility increase with the skills that they acquire through this direct participation in a fully operative business. And with this grows their confidence and belief that they can achieve anything they want in their lives, despite the setbacks they may already have experienced.
We will take on three students at a time and teach them everything from the basics to advance culinary arts; they will also be expected to attend college on day release. After a 6 month paid training program we will find them employment in hotels and restaurants in Glasgow and beyond.
This training program will be the first step to starting our larger scale non-profit culinary school which is geared toward "at risk" youths in the Glasgow area. Northern Soul’s Kitchen will be more than just a restaurant. We will be a positive addition to the community.
Your support will help us towards getting the restaurant ready. We are initially looking to raise £9,000 to get started, then create another campaign to finish the project. Here is the breakdown of our costs:
Reconditioned stove, oven, and other equipment = £3500
Decorating = £1000
Uniforms, text books, and culinary tool kits for first 3 trainees = £1500
Menus, website, marketing and legal fees = £3000
Any additional funds will go towards the culinary training program for the next intake of trainees.
Northern Soul's Kitchen is the brainchild of chef Sean Kane, who has worked in kitchens such as The Savoy in London. and practised over the years in a variety of restaurants and on tour as personal chef to bands such as Black Sabbath and Oasis.
You can be a part of this exciting enterprise - back the project, help disadvantaged young people, and inspire them to a better future.
Thank you so much for viewing our project and a great big thank you in advance for funding our goal! We are super excited to bring this concept to Glasgow!
